Don't Feel Pain After Exercising, Have You Exercised Enough


Why do people think that you need to feel sore after a workout to know you've done enough?

"No pain, no gain" is a common expression used to get into shape.

There are many reasons why your muscles may feel sore after a workout, but it's not what determines whether it works or not.

You don't have to feel sore after a workout to know you've been working out well.  Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is the term above.

This usually happens after doing strenuous exercise or exercise that has never been done.  This is common in all types of sports, often occurs in eccentric sports

Eccentric exercise is a muscle movement to withstand weights.  Like going down the evidence or stairs.  Feeling sore after exercise can occur after a few hours, usually peaking about two days later, depending on the volume of exercise.

The Scientific Theory of not feeling sick after exercise (DOMS):

  • Mechanical damage (muscle protein structure)
  • Damage to the membrane that covers the muscles
  • Damage to the tissue around muscle fibers
  • The body's inflammatory response, stimulates nerves and causes pain.

There is some degree of exercise-induced muscle breakdown.  Exercise can help build bigger and stronger muscles

Fact: exercise-induced muscle damage can reduce how well muscles work after exercise.  You will not feel pain after exercising at the same time

This explains why exercising regularly does not experience DOMS.  Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the damaging effects of exercise on muscles after ten training sessions.

How often and severely a person experiences DOMS varies, older people are more prone to exercise-induced muscle damage, perhaps because their muscles recover less after strenuous exercise.

If you exercise regularly and don't feel sore later in the day or after exercise, then rest assured that your workout is still working - your muscles become better at dealing with muscle damage and recovering.

If you want to get fitter and stronger, gradually increase the amount of exercise, such as adding additional weights.

Try gradually increasing the number of reps you do each week or the number of weights you lift.  Improved fitness and strength will show how effective your previous workout was.
